I think that it'd help if I decided to think of this mixed metaphors as meaningful; "Some people sail through life on a bed of roses like a knife slicing through butter". Kind of a tongue-twister, but I'm sure that it has hidden depths. Kind of like still waters running deep (although on second thoughts if the waters are still, how can they run at all?).

The second, that a person's life is like a television show, and you're the presenter. Think about every conversation you have as if you're an interviewer, and the audience of one wants to know something intractable about your interviewee.
