Somebody get me out of here
I'm tearing at myself
Nobody gives a damn about me
or...
anybody else.

And it's really not surprising
The most socially acceptable, and probably the most widespread form of hate crime among teenagers and young adults are those targeting sexual minorities. There are four main categories of assaulters involved in such crimes, as follows:
  1. Ideology assailants report that their crimes stem from their negative beliefs and attitudes about homosexuality that they perceive other people in the community share. They see themselves as enforcing social morals.

  2. Thrill seekers are typically adolescents who commit assaults to alleviate boredom, to have fun and excitement, and to feel strong.

  3. Peer-dynamics assailants also tend to be adolescents; they commit assaults in an effort to prove their toughness and heterosexuality to friends.

  4. Self-defense assailants typically believe that homosexuals are sexual predators and say they were responding to aggressive sexual propositions.

Lesbian and gay victims suffer more serious psychological effects from hate crimes than they do from other kinds of criminal injury. In their case, the association between vulnerability and sexual orientation is particularly harmful. This is because sexual identity is such an important part of one's self-concept.

Which is why there needs to be some kind of crusade against the perpetuation of this crap by many public bodies, including administrative sections of UQ. I am currently accepting offers of help in all areas of counter-activism which will assist (specifically those willing to assist me in hurling petrol bombs through the windows of unthinkingly pan-phobic, ignorant gimps who populate most areas of student politics) in dragging all these bastards kicking and screaming into the present day.

I used to fight for the cause, back when we were still trying to get homosexual acts decriminalised here in Qld.

These days I'm more about an odd mix of information, communication, confusion, obfuscation and impish fun, than marches and petrol bombs... but plenty of things still get me riled up. I'm still ready to fight.

Chris & I have a 4 year old son, currently being shaped by playground culture, plus our own efforts. But I know the first time I hear him say "poofter" I'm going to cry. Just cry.

World culture still has such a long way to go, and I fear Australia will be the slowest on the uptake.

I remember once I was on a camp (unrelated to highschool, but while I was at highschool) I really liked this guy, but not enough to actually want to *do* anything with him. Maybe another time and place, but thats not what I was there for. So when he invited me to his bed, and I said no, word got around, and somehow from that they decided I was gay, because afterwards I hung out with the girls, rather than the boys, because the situation had become uncomfortable.

It got worse after then, because of their decision on my sexual orientation, all sorts of snide remarks were being made right left and center. Somehow I managed to ignore them, but I'm sure on a deeper level it hurt.

Your post just reminded me of that, and although it's minor compared to some of the horror stories I've seen and heard, I can only imagine the widescale of it. Tolerance does need to be instilled at the very basic level, from birth onwards. I've looked at the way I was brought up, and realised that although tolerance wasn't taught directly "YOU WILL BE TOLERANT" it was definitely a value that I gained, maybe through not being taught intolerance.

Anyway, thats my friday morning thought penny.
