I've started using Ubuntu again after spending a frustrating hour updating packages and recompiling alsa-kernel and alsa-driver, as 2.6.24 doesn't appear to support the sound card in my laptop properly. Why, you may ask, did I bother? Why not just use windows? Why not just give up and go quietly into that good night, surrendering all personal will I possessed to the corporations who dearly wish to control my life, living and income? Well, to properly answer I'd have to relate how I first turned to a life of crime... which is to say, wireless 802.11 hacking. Now apparently the super-power-users in win32 land are no strangers to this, but my eyes glazed over at the third paragraph on installing Cygwin and not wanting to revisit that particular circle of hell after my last foray just following the turn of the millennium (where Cygwin wasn't quite bad enough to give me cancer and settled instead for tonsillitis brought on by bouts of intense yelling at the screen) I wondered whether I'd already installed things like kismet and aircrack on my Ubuntu installation.

Happily, I had! So after some minutes of fun I'd managed to use forums to play DVD's (shock horror, linux plays media!) This is something Windows Vista Business steadfastly refuses to do out of the box, and honestly who cares enough to go through some densely coded howto explaining how to make it do something Microsoft apparently don't believe anyone running anything approximating a business should be doing. Stop watching porn please, all you people pretending to work! We're sick of it, totally desensitised, all we see is stuff going in and out of other stuff, in focus.

So as to my last complaint about Ubuntu; the barely perceptible delay between keystrokes and letters appearing on the keyboard was fixed in the last kernel update, but that was so definitively suck-ness that I felt it didn't deserve an honorable mention until I'd bothered to fix the other problem... okay, linux is just better than windows. Less hardwarecide, less pain, less with the stabbing. Yes with the aircrack, yes with the DVD's, yes with the media. Still, I can't help but wonder, what annoyance will next drive me back to windows for a few weeks?
