food for thoughtlessness; golden ratios
Nov. 30th, 2001 03:07 pmThe shape of the golden ratio is found almost everywhere in nature and in mathematics. In the shape of a seashell, in the arms of the galaxies, in deoxyribonucleic acid...
Hypothesis: Therefore, if we are made out of spirals, and we live in a giant spiral, must not everything we touch be infused with the same spiral of the golden ratio?
Antithesis: That the apparent coincidence of this as well as the highly unlikely nature of this belies the undercurrent of belivability. Occams razor cannot be applied without sufficient empiral evidence, so there's a large element of doubt here. It remains simply a philosophy or a way of thinking which endeavours to understand the universe.
Thesis: The movie 'Pi' dealt with this in an admirable fashion, especially given that a belief in this hypothesis assuages the fear that not everything may be explainable or understandable through simple or complex mathematical systems. However, even the realisation this this hypothesis is unprovable requires some kind faith in chaos. :)
